The 1975 schedule called for
completion of dam and basic facilities (closure of gates)
by January 1982.

Proposed Sources of Funding:

Narrows ,is a Water and Power Resources Service (Bureau
,

of Reclamation) project. Estimated cost of the Narrows
Unit based on 1977 figures of $162 million. About $96
million of that cost are reimbursabie, consisting ()f:
Irrigation, $92 million; Fish & Wildlife and Recreation, $4
million.

About $66 million are considered nonreimbursable, but
are considered to be a desirable Federal Investment. In
addition, specific beneficiaries cannot be identified. Non-
reim bursable costs consist of: flood control, fish & wildlife,
recreation, and highway improvement.

The Narrows Unit has a favorable benefit-cost ratio of 2.06
to 1, which means that for every $1 invested in the project,
benefits of 2.06 will accrue.

Once completed, many dif1erent organizations and
groups wll be Involved in operating the unit. Initially, the
Bureau of Reclamation will operate and maintain the
Narrows Dam and Reservoir. The Corps of Engineers will
direct flood control operations during times of flooding,
and the two water conservancy districts have contracted
for irrigation water. The districts will in turn, sell water to
Individuals and ditch and canal companies, which have
existing irrigation distribution works.

Recreation and fish and wildlife lands and facilities will be
transferred to appropriate State agencies for management
and operation.

For Further Information Contact:

Gary R. A small dam which has been washed out
for many years, had been constructed at this site In the
early 1900's. The City of Fort Collins acquired the storage
right of 530 acre feet In this reservolrln the early 1950's. As
the water demands continue to grow for Fort Collins,
additional storage capacity will be required. It is presently
contemplated that the Sheep Creek Dam will be rebuilt
and quite possibly enlarged to store approximately 4,000
acre feet. The proposed reservoir would provide ad-
ditional storage capacity to capture water under Its
storage decree as well as by exchange with other rights.
The project site was Included in a recently proposed

wilderness area; however, it appears that the site will be
excluded from designation.

Physical Facts and Figures:
Height, length and type of dam: Height 100 ft.; length
1,000 feet; earth embankment
Storage capacity (A.F.) of reservoir: 4,000 acre feet
Shoreline and surface area: Shoreline - 2.0 ml.
