Ute <br />Mountain Ute Indian Tribe and City 01 Durango. <br /> <br />Primary Purpose of the Project <br />Municipal, Industrial and Irrigation water supply. <br />Secondary Benellts: <br />Recreation, Fish and Wildlife, and Archeological site <br />preservation. <br /> <br />History and Background: <br /> <br />Development of Animas River Water lor irrigation use in <br />the La Plata River drainage has been studied at various <br />times since the early 1900's. <br /> <br />Since authorization lor construction in 1968, ninety some <br />alternative plans have been studied. The main storage <br />feature of the project will be Ridges Basin Reservoir, <br />located southwest of Durango. The Durango Pumping <br />Plant will pump Animas River water to the reservoir The <br />reservoir will store waler for municipal use in Durango, <br />Farmington, Aztec and Bloomfield. for industrial and <br />irngation use for the Southern Ute and Ute Mountain Ute <br />Indian Tribes. and for irrigation use in the Colorado <br />Service area. <br /> <br />The Ridges Basin Pumpmg Plant would pump water from <br />the reservoir into the Dry Side Canal for irrigation use in <br />the La Plata River drainage. and for municipal and <br />industrial use by the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Tribe. <br /> <br />Southern Ute Reservoir will slore La Plata River water <br />diverted through the Southern Ute Diversion Dam and <br />Canal. It will meet the municipal and industrial water <br />requirements of the Southern Ute Indians and the irriga~ <br />tion requirements ot the New Mexico lands. <br /> <br /> <br />Recreation facilities would be provided at Ridges Basin <br />':!nd Southern Ute Reservoirs. Lands would be obtained <br />near both reservoirs to compensate tor lost wildlife <br />habitat. Congressional authorization is being sought to <br />exceed ellishng limitations on federal expenditures 10 <br />mitigate and enhance cullural resources. <br /> <br />A Draft Definite Plan Report and the Draft EnvIronmental <br />Statement were completed in 1979. The Final En- <br />vironmental Statement is expected to be filed with the EPA <br />in July, 1980, and the Definile Plan Report is expected to <br />be approved at about the same lime. <br /> <br />Congress has not yet appropriated funds to begin con~ <br />slructlon of the project.
