2024

In ihi! o"ucia 1 cO'hpctit-ion ..;:::. commur,i$l!t, it. imt.'mv., tl tll-i

universal fair dealing.
Question: And now, Mr, Fox, will you please give us a few closing remarks?

Answer: In closing, I sul:mit for your consideration one conviction, at which I
have arrived largely as a result of Russian exposures and experiences, and the
deliberation which they have stimulated.

The shortcomings of the world cannot be corrected by panaceas, ideologies,
deals or isms. These partake of the nature of short cuts. They are superficial
and illusory, They seek to conjure through fonnula what can only be accomplished
through effort. To encourage dependence upon them is to arouse false hope. .

People constitute a Nation, The composite of the deeds of the people de-
termines the status of the Nation, A civilization can progress only by the slow
and laborious process of upbuilding the humanity which comprises that civilization.
And the bettennent of humanity can only result from the integrated betterment of
individuals.

Therefore, that type of government and that system of organization and enter-
prise are best which contribute most effectively to the advancement of mankind
through the development of manhood.

A collective economy inevitably weakens Citizenship. It denies the exercise
of individual judgment. Servility replaces initiative. Independence resigns to blind
obedience, Self-sufficiency turns to dependence, The disciplines in such a society
are imposed from without - regimentation, the blight of men's souls.

Free enterprise, on the contrary, places a premium on individual effort, It
stimulates resourcefulness, ingenuity, enterprise, initiative. It opens the door to
opportunity, It places no limits on accomplishment. It is not based on compulsion
and coercion. It is based on relf-discipline, which is the only truly effective dis-
cipline, It is the honor system - applied to life.

Our S\JCcess and our progress in the material world of science and mechanics
has not been ilnposed from above, No group of supermen have supplied all the answers.
Rather, our advance has resulted from inn\llllerable small contributions :made by count-
less individuals.

In a similar Ilanner we must progress in the world of human relations. We must
recognize that the composite result is but the integration of a myriad of individual
incremental decisions and acts. 1,Je can preserve our liberties, achieve lasting
peace and promote general happiness only if we as a Nation attain high standards of
honesty, integrity, tolerance and justice, meriting and earning such rewards, As
we can attain these standards as a Nation only if we cherish them as individuals.
We cannot evade our own personal moral imperatives. For we are the atOlll& which de-
fine the kind of alloy of which our Nation is lIIade.

-14-
