YAMPAlWHITE BASIN

Basinwide Conditions Assessment
The SWSI value of -2.2 indieates that for February
the basin water supplies were below normal. The Natural
Resourees Conservation Serviee reports that Mareh 1
snowpaek is 90% of normal. Flow at the gaging station
Yampa River at Steamboat was estimated at 104 efs, as
eompared to the long-term average of 98 efs.
Preeipilation for February was 75% of average
aeross the basin. Temperatures eontinued to be above
average. Year-to-date preeipitation for the water year fell to
90% of average. The basin-wide snowpaek deereased
slightly to 90% of average. For the North Platte, Yampa and
White Rivers, this makes seven out of the last eight years
that the Mareh 1 snowpaek was below average.

Outlook
The Mareh 1 runoff foreeast released by the Natural
resourees Conservation Serviee for the most probable runoff
eondition is for 75% of average for the North Platte River
near Northgate; 76% of average for the Yampa River near
Maybell; 92 % of average for the Little Snake River near
Dixon; and 69% of average for the White River near Meeker.
These pereentages represent about a 5% deerease from the
previous month for the North Platte and Yampa Rivers, and a
20% drop for the White River.
With only about four to six weeks remaining in the
normal snow aeeumulation season, it will be diffieult to reaeh
average snowpaek eonditions without a shift in the existing
weather eonditions. If the below average snowpack
eonditions eontinue, the basin is likely to see drought
eonditions eontinue.

Public Use Impaets
Many area rivers, espeeially at lower elevations, are
free of iee and open for fishing. Elkhead Reservoir has been
lowered to a minimum level for eonstruetion purposes, and
will be elosed to the publie for at least two years.

Mar-05

-.-

"
~

w
3
<
> 0
~
o
.

.,

>
~
,

~

Jal.97.-..o1..Ja>alJlnOOJm.C1Jan..lI.!Ja1.OO.B>ll4Jin.C6
-,-

YM/PA ~ AT STEPM3OAT, FLCNV BY WAlER YEAA

tOO,em
90,000

1i 80,00)
i 70,000

~ 60,000
o
LC so,coo
w
~ 40,000
:5
~ 3O,lXX!
"
o 20,00)

10,00)
o
Q1

Fob

"'"

""

"'"

"""

.....'

-o-\f.ET(1984\

~IWG

--CRf(1977)

"*2!<>;

8
