THE TREATMENT PROCESS

Primary treatment removes a large portion of
wastewater solids by sedimentation. Sedimentation
is the process by which flocculated water (circulated
water that has been treated with a chemical to make
large particles in the water stick together) is placed
in a holding tank, allowing the particles to settle to
the bottom of holding basins or tanks for removal.

Secondary treatment is a biological treatment
process involving oxidation and sedimentation of
primary treated wastewater. Secondary treatment
mayor may not include disinfection.

Tertiary treatment involves coagulation, floculation,
clarification, filtration and disinfection of secondary
treated water.

Can be applied by surface irrigation on fiber,
fodder. and seed crops not consumed by
humans. However, in the near future, only
secondary treated water will be allowed.

Secondary Treatment

Can be applied by surface irrigation on
orchards, vineyards, trees and vines and,
under restrictive conditions, to golf courses
and landscaping.

Tertiary Treatment

Advanced treatment includes treating tertiary
treated water and may include organics removal
(granulated carbon) and membranes to filter out
micro-contaminants. Some membrane technologies
also provide a physical barrier to salts and ionic
contaminants. They are considered more effective
at filtering out microorganisms, including particular
pathogens, then conventional sand filters. Part of
advanced treatment for potable recycled water
includes allowing water to sif in underground aquifers
or surtace reservoirs for many months prior to final
treatment at a drinking water plant.

Can be applied by spray irrigation on parks,
playgrounds, recreation lakes, golf courses,
schoolyards, industrial uses, the environment,
and numerous edibie food crops.

Advanced Treatment

Potabie water.

s
