<br />Government Highline Canal System <br />near <br />Grand Junction <br /> <br />This photograph shows the Government Highline <br />Canal near Palisade, Colorado with the Book <br />Cliffs in the backgroulld. The canal is con- <br />slrUcted on the west and north side of the Coler <br />rado RIVer near Grand Junction and Palisade It <br />extends from the Grand Valley Diversion Dam. <br />which is located 8 miles northeast of Palisade. <br />This concrete weir is 14 feel high and 546 feel <br />long. Flow over Its crest is controlled by Sill roller <br />gales These gales were the firs! of their type <br />deSigned In the United States. <br /> <br />Approximately 4.6 miles below the main diver- <br />sion, waler fOf the Orchard Mesa Di....ersion is <br />diverted from the canal. From the Orchard Mesa <br />diversion. the Government Hl9hline Canal runs <br />parallel 10 the river westward. distributing water <br />10 laterals of the Garfield Gravrty DIVision. Water <br />also is furnished to 8.580 acres in the Mesa <br />County and Palisade IrrigatIOn Districts which <br />were 5el"i'ed by private facilities prior to project <br />construction. <br /> <br />The Government Highline canal runs southwest <br />for a distance of 55 miles. The Grand Valley <br />protect has a capaCIty of 1,675 cfs. which in- <br />dudes 800 cubIC feet per second for the Orchard <br />Mesa Power Canal. The remammg flows are <br />dlSlnbuted through the Government Highhne <br />Canal and Price-$tubb Pumping Plant <br /> <br />The Price-$tubb Pumping Plant is on the canal <br />near Tunnel No.3 Outlet at the east end of the <br />Grand Valley_ II lifts 25 cfs of waler 31 feet to the <br />Stub/) Drtch 10 seNe land of the Mesa County <br />Imgatton Distncl. Power is provided 10 tne hy- <br />draulic pump by water In the Price Ditch that is <br />belllQ delivered 10 the Palisade IrrigatIOn Dlstnct <br /> <br /> .....- -- <br /> , .
