GARDENER
Water Conservation Manager, Denver Water Department
Liz Gardenh is a native of Englcwood, Colorado who grew up in a home built by her parents at
the end of the hpple orchard planted by her grandfather. She learned about growing vegetables from
Grandpa Childers and about water conservation from Grandma Childers. Taking those things for
granted, she decided upon a career as a high school history teacher, thinking therc would be long
summer vacations for travel and fun. However, those undergrad years went by so fast that she for-
got a very important aspect of her career choice: football. History teachers don't get jobs unless they
can coach football!
So...after a couple of years in substitute teaching, she returned to Colorado and began worki~g for
Denver Water as the "Complaint Department" for the Quality Control Laboratory. During that time,
she designed a watcr education program for kids and was assigned the Schools Outreach Program.
Coincidentally, that first year was that of the 1977-78 drought, and the program's focus shifted to water conservation. Ten years and
40,000 kids later, Liz became Denver Water's Conservation Officer. She now oversees the programs to achieve 30% of Denver's
future water supplies from conservation, with a focus on this as one aspect of a sustainable future.
In her spare time, Liz practices her grandparents' gardening techniques at her Denver home and spends time with her furry friend,
Roy Fawcett, hiking, cross-country skiing and traveling.

'"~',,, ;,; '/~f'~O^

JIM KNOPF
Landscape Architect (Boulder, Colorado)
Jim Knopf holds a Master's Degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Michigan,
and is a Registered Landscape Architect (State of Georgia).
