<br />DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE <br /> <br />Army Corps of Engineers builds dams, <br />canals and harbors. Its activities also include <br />non-structural programs in the areas of flood <br />control, conservation, hydroelectric power, <br />water supply, water quaiity control and river <br />basin planning. The Corps also administers 404 <br />dredge and fill discharge permits. <br /> <br />DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH <br />AND HUMAN SERVICES <br /> <br />HHS provides expertise on public health <br />aspects of water quaiity. Food and Drug <br />Administration, Bureau of Community <br />Environmental Management and National <br />Institute of Environmental Health Sciences are <br />units of HHS which administer water related <br />activities and programs. <br /> <br />DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE <br /> <br />Water related interests of the Department <br />generally concern information for the <br />development of water resource poiicies as they <br />.~13I~!El !9.Il1<:lQufi:l9!IJ.r.iIl9,!l.I}9;'!@ly;::il]ga,l]d <br />forecasting industrial water supply needs. <br />Economic Development Administration <br />channels financial assistance for public works <br />projects or development programs, including <br />waste disposal facilities and watershed <br />protection. Regional Economic Development <br />Commissions have been authorized to act as <br />economic planning, investigative, advisory <br />bodies for the designated regions. One of these, <br />the Four Corners Regional Commission, <br />includes the southwest portion of Colorado, <br />together with adjacent sections of Arizona, New <br />Mexico and Utah. <br /> <br />National Weather Service forecasts the <br />weather and conducts research on <br />ciimatological phenomena. Weather <br />modification researc.h projects and data <br />collection are part of this program. <br />Bureau of the Census collects data <br />bearing on water and related land resources and <br />makes this information available to pubiic or <br />private individuals or agencies. It produces <br />statistics on irrigation, water supplies and <br />drainage. Other tabulations cover industrial and <br />domestic water use and facilities. <br /> <br />DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND <br />URBAN DEVELOPMENT <br /> <br />HUD has certain block grants that are <br />avaiJabie,to..small'oommunities;"FheselTlay'be . <br />used for water and sewer facilities. <br /> <br />DEPARTMENT OF STATE <br /> <br />International Boundary and Water <br />Commission resolves questions or differences <br />concerning the parts of the border of the United <br />States and Mexico which are formed by the Rio <br />Grande and the Colorado Rivers. It is concerned <br />with the 1944 treaty apportioning the waters of <br />the Colorado River between the two countries <br />and the 1973 agreement to control salinity levels <br />of the Colorado River. <br /> <br />FEDERAL ENERGY <br />REGULATORY COMMISSION <br /> <br />FERC is responsible for iicensing <br />proposed non-federal hydroelectric projects. It <br />also makes recommendations to other <br />agencies, such as river basin commissions, on <br />their water development projects and long range <br />planning. <br /> <br />NUCLEAR REGULATORY <br />COMMISSION <br /> <br />.. NRG-Hcensesatomicfueledpowerplants <br />and is concerned with the quality and safe <br />disposal of waste waters discharged from <br />nuclear installations. Radioactivity and high <br />temperatures of the discharged waters cause <br />special problems in community relations as well <br />as in their technical treatment. <br /> <br />FEDERAL EMERGENCY <br />MANAGEMENT AGENCY <br /> <br />The Federal Emergency Management <br />Agency administers the National Flood <br />Insurance Program. <br /> <br />Page 13 <br />
