<br /> <br />..... <br />... <br /> <br />~ <br />~ <br /> <br /> <br />Our World Award <br />The Boulder Creek Watershed <br />Initiative (BCW!) was awarded the <br />2004 Our World Award, the premier <br />environmental award in the Boulder <br />community. The Our \Vorld Award is <br />given by the Preserve Planet Earth <br />Committee of the Boulder Rotary Club, <br />Roche Colorado Corporation. and the <br />Boulder Energy Conservation Center. <br />The award is given once a year to <br />individuals and organizations from <br />Boulder \\'ho provide a significant <br />contribution to the preservation and <br />awareness of the environment. Award <br />winners arc selected based all a variety <br />of criteria including leadership in <br />developing environmental programs <br />and raising awareness of and identifying <br />solutions for environmental issues. \Vc <br />are VCIY grateful for this recognition. <br /> <br />Watershed Forum Series <br />neWl has continued to fOCllS on <br />infonning the public about topics of <br />interest and importance to the Boulder <br />Creek Watershed. The principal vehicle <br />for doing this has been the \Vatershed <br />Forum Series. held 10 times a year at <br />the Boulder Public Library. <br />Topics discussed in 2003 included <br />impacts of mining. droughts. and off- <br />road vehicles on water quality. Topics <br />in 2004 include air quality. fire at <br />the urban interface. impact of septic <br />systems on water quality. and sexual <br />disruption of fish. <br /> <br />All forums arc videotaped and <br />shown 011 City of Boulder Channel <br />8 television. and arc also available <br />for borrow at the Boulder Public <br />LibraI)'. There have been more than <br />70 \Vatcrshcd Forum lectures since <br />1997. <br /> <br />Creek Cleanup <br />BCWI organized several creek <br />cleanups in 2003 and 2004. We have <br />adopted a stretch of Boulder Creek and <br />pick up trash along that stretch. \Ve also <br />were involved in the citywide creek <br />cleanups that occurred along Boulder <br />Creek in May. <br /> <br />Public Outreach <br />BC\VI is involved in a creative and <br />fun puppet show on the imp0I1ancc of <br />clean water. The puppet show, which <br />is sponsored by the City of Boulder, <br />the U.S. Geological Survey. and Roche <br />Colorado. has been performed at <br /> <br /> <br />H20 Jo and Flo, water <br />quality mascots, teach <br />how citizens can help <br />keep our waters clean. <br /> <br />Boulder Creek <br /> <br /> <br />I oca.1 ,yv a te rs l1ed Le po rts <br /> <br /> <br />schools. festivals. and the Farmer's <br />Market in Boulder. <br />The story involves a young girl <br />writing an article for her school paper. <br />While walking along Boulder Creek, <br />the girl meets several creatures who <br />tell the girl about their lives and \\lhy <br />clean water is important to them, She <br />learns several things wc can all do <br />to help keep Boulder Creek and its <br />tributaries clean. <br />BC\VI also is a partner in a <br />new water quality communications <br />campaign for the Boulder County <br />area. H20 Jo and 1'10 (a water drop <br />and a greenback cutthroat trout) arc <br />part ofa water quality communications <br />campaign developed by the City of <br />Boulder, with funding provided by <br />Colorado Deartment of Public Health <br />and Environment through grants from <br />the U.S. Environmcntal Protection <br />Agency. Their message is. "Keep it <br />clean, 'cause wc're all downstrcam~" <br />These clever mascots tcach how \\'e can <br />help kccp our waters clean. <br />
