The
project was tcnned the Statewide
H'llfer Sllpp~V /nitialit'e (S\VSI).
The legislature authorized up to
$3 million for the project and
requested that it be completed in
1 g months, which means a final
report is due to the legislature
in November 2004. The CWCB
hired Camp Dresser and McKee in
.Iune 2003 to belp them
complete the project. Several
subcontractors arc also assisting
\vith the project.

Background
The CWCB is located in the
Colorado Department of Natural
Resources. Part of the eWeB mission
and statutory authorities include the
following:

. Identifying, prioritizing and
recommending watcr development
projects to the General Assembly

The overall goal of S\VSI is: "To
help ensure that Colorado will have
adequate water supplies for its citizens
and the environment." The first step in

An important
consideration in the
SWSI process is
to ensure that the
local interests are
represented.

reaching this goal was to summarize by
each of Colorado '$ eight major river
basins, at a reconnaissance (general
overview) level. existing water supplies
and demands and projected demands up
to 30 years into the future. Once this
task is completed. a range of potential
means for meeting existing and future
demands can be developed.
An impOl1ant consideration in the
SWSI process is to ensure that local
interests are represented. and to build
upon all the work that is bcing done by
local water planning entities. In many
river basins, local planning entities have
completed studies, idcntificd projects,
and arc capable of implementing
projects with little to no support. S\VSI
will document and summarize these
situations.
