Starkville was pre-

dominantly a coal mining town when the coal mines wer~ in operation.

NOw, most of the inhabitants commute to Trinidad, where their jobs

are. It is expected that, with the renewed interest in coal 'mining,

the job situation of the town may change in the near future.

Most of the present water system of the town was donated to

them by the Santa Fe Railroad in 1955. The system consists pri-

marily of a 4-inch CIP collection system up Clear Creek Canyon to

the springs on the southwestern slope of Fishers Peak. storage

donated was a 140,000-gallon tank in the center of town. Since

then, the town has built two additional storage tanks, one of

196,000 gallons at the Clear Creek-Raton Creek junction, and another

tank of about 200,000 gallons on Raton Creek about ,3/4 mile upstream
from the town limits. In town, a 3-inch CIP loop distributes the
water to the citizens. Meters were used in the past, but most of
. them are now inoperative, mainly because they were not maintained
