<br />various alternatives were explored by the consulting firm, all of which <br />were presented to the Gunnison city officials for decision. <br />The feasibility report has now been completed" As a result, after <br />considerable consultation with the staff of this board and the con- <br />sulting engineering firm, the city officials have now made a decision <br />as to the course of action which the city wishes to follow. The <br />completed feasibility report and the course of action selected by the <br />city of Gunnison constitute the basis for the project description and <br />recommendations contained herein. <br />PROPOSED PROJECT <br />The selected course of action involves an enlargement of the <br />existing municipal water system in two phases. The first phase contem- <br />plates the construction of two new municipal wells, a storage tank and <br />associated facilities at an estimated cost of about $700,000" The <br />second phase contemplates a diversion of surface water from the Gunnison <br />River and associated facilities at a cost of approximately $2,000,000" <br />Cost estimates for the two phases are attached hereto. <br />The advantages of first expanding the existing municipal well <br />system include uniform water temperature during the winter, fewer <br />freezing problems, ability to provide water nearer to growth as growth <br />occurs, very limited treatment requirements, maintenance of uniform <br />pressure throughout the distribution system and a lower initial cost. <br />The disadvantages of adding to the existing well system include <br />the uncertainty in estimating future probable yields, vulnerability to <br />pollution, possible higher levels of hardness, and in meeting the annual <br />spring demand when the groundwater table is low. <br /> <br />-3- <br />
