<br />, <br /> <br />COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD <br />102 Columbine Building <br />1845 Sherman Street <br />Denver, Colorado 80203 <br /> <br />January 7, 1976 <br /> <br />GREETVILLE-CARBONDALE PROJECT <br /> <br />INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />The Greetvi11e-Carbonda1e project is being sponsored by the <br />Greetvi11e-Carbonda1e Water Association which represents an unincorpo- <br />rated area some two miles south of the city of Trinidad in Las Animas <br />County. Forty-two families reside in the area, most of whom exist on <br />low fixed incomes. The average annual family income in the area is <br />about $4,000, with a number of families existing on an average annual <br />income of less than $3,000. <br />There is no community water system for the area. Historically, <br />the domestic water supply has been obtained from a number of individu- <br />ally owned shallow wells" Some of these wells have now gone dry and <br />others are nearing depletion. Some families now obtain water by hauling <br />it from outside sources. The city of Trinidad has offered to provide <br />water for not to exceed fifty individual taps in the Greetvi11e~Carbonda1e <br /> <br />area. <br /> <br />PROBLEM <br /> <br />The obvious problem is the almost total lack of domestic water for <br />the community. The fact that many of the existing wells have gone dry <br />and others are approaching depletion poses a considerable hardship upon <br />the residents of the area. Most of the residents have resided in their <br />present homes most of their lives and are not financially able to secure <br />housing at other locations.
