Streamgaging Station
with satellite teleme-
try on French Gulch
at Breckenridge,

Streamflow data

StreamflO\v data coordination is one of the ongoing agenda items at the Data Chief
Coordination meeting. Data are shared between the agencies and the public via
websites and direct data feeds, Additionally, streamtlow data from 32 sites oper-
ated by the DWR are reviewed and published by the USGS,

DIRECT FIELD STAFF
COORDINATION

Day-la-day coordination occurs between the statT of all three agencies. Contact is
made as needed, and mutual support routinely is ofl'ered among the agencies.
Help includes equipment repair and maintenance and streamflow data trouble-
shooting. For example. if a hydrographer discovers a problem with another
agency's gage while on site, a temporary repair will be made so data are not lost.

TRAINII'iG COORDINATION

Attendance at the USGS National Training Center allows DWR employees to be
trained in USGS streamgaging techniques and data analysis, At the Dala Chief
Coordination meetings, information on technology and methodology is regularly
exchanged to benetit all agencies. In the past few years, DWR personnel have
received training by USGS statl'in indirect flow measurement, running levels, and
developing shill curves,

GAGING STATION COORDII'iATION

To properly administer waler rights, the State of Colorado utilizes the data col-
lected by the statewide streamgaging network. The installation of ne\v sites is
closely coordinated belween the USGS, CWCB, and the DWR to avoid duplica-
tion ofetlorts. At some USGS locations, the State may require more frequent data
verification, and therefore, makes additional streamtlO\\l measurements that are
incorporated into the station record, thus improving the accuracy of the data. The
USGS publishes that data and all agencies benetit from the improved quality of
the record. The three agencies are also in the process of developing joint flood
criteria for stream gages. This criteria would enable the public to receive better
and earlier \\lamillgs in the event of floods.

.
