which one or more city officials were interviewed, their records
reviewed, and the water system was visited. To supplement avail-
able information on chemical quality of water, 175 water samples
were collected and analyzed, and field measurements of conduct-
ivity and temperature were made at nearly every community. Some
communities where the water supply was subject to substantial
seasonal variation in quality were revisited expressly for the
purpose of obtaining additional water samples. Except for the
quality-of-water data and a few miscellaneous field measurements,
the records in this report are largely those reported and re-
corded by officials of the cities, state, and private agencies.
Certain of the reported figures are estimates made by the project
man making the visit. These are indicated in the report.

Sources of Information and Acknowledgements

The two most valuable sources of information to this project
were the extensive records of the Mountain states Inspection
Bureau and the Colorado Department of Public Health. Special
thanks are extended to D. G. Mees of the Bureau and to W. N. Gahr
of the Department for their assistance in making the records
available. Thanks are given also to the engineering firms who
supplied reports of several municipal water-supply systems.
The chief contributor in this group was Harold Hoskins and Assoc-
iates, Engineering consultants, Greeley, Colo.

A substantial amount of information on water rights and
municipal wells was obtained from the State Engineer's Office
through the courtesy of J. E. Whitten, State Engineer and
G. w. colburn, Chief of the Ground Water Section.

The splendid cooperation of the many municipal water super-
intendents and other city and town officials is gratefully
acknowledged. The names of most of them are mentioned in this
report with the descriptions of their municipal water supplies.

Several publications contained information of considerable
value to this project. Lohr and Love (1954, p. 146-153) describe
the water systems of the 10 largest cities in Colorado and list
several analyses of water samples. The U.S. Department of
Health, Education, and Welfare (1958, p. 14-16) summarizes the
water-supply facilities of Colorado Springs, Denver, and Pueblo.
Several other reports that supplied useful information are
listed in the bibliography of this report. The Geological
Survey's file of unpublished records was also a valuable source
of information.

In addition to the several agencies and individuals men-
tioned, many others have supplied advice and information which
added greatly to the value of this project. The authors hereby
extend their gratitude to this anonymous group.

3
