The dam and reservoir both lie within the
Rio Grande National Forest. The project was originally built
in 1930 with. a dam height of 18 feet and a reservoir storage
capaci ty of 110 acre-feet. In 1938 the dam height was in-
creased to 21 feet which increased the reservoir storage to
153 acre-feet. A final enlargement occurred in 1943 to
increase the storage capacity to 241 acre-feet. The stored
water is used to provide late season water for Fuchs Ranches,
Inc.

Problem

The emergency spillway for the dam is located in the
left abutment. It is a wooden structure which uses flash-
boards to control the depth of water in the reservoir. Over
the years severe erosion has occurred in the spillway channel
below the dam. This channel lies along the toe of a steep
hillside and slides have occurred on the hillside above the
channel. A U.S. Forest Service road passes through this
slide area. That agency and the State Engineer's Office have
asked the reservoir owners to correct the erosion problem.

Project Study

In October, 1980, Fuchs Ranches, Inc., applied to the
CWCB for financial assistance to correct the. spillway channel
erosion problem. At the December, 1980, Board meeting a
feasibility study for the project was authorized. That study
has now been completed by HydrO-Triad, Ltd., and is the basis
of the recommendation for this project.

400
f-6
