I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

SAN JUAN RIVER UNIT (HAMMOND PORTION)

Project Setting

The Hammond Project is located in northwestern New Mexico along the southern
bank of the San Juan River and extends approximately 20 miles east of
Farmington to Blanco, New Mexico. The project provides irrigation water to
about 3,900 acres. The entire irrigation supply is obtained from the direct
flows of the river. However, if necessary, the flows can be supplemented from
Navajo Reservoir located approximately 10 miles upstream from the Hammond
Diversion Dam.

Project Features

At present, about 27 of the 37 miles of project canals and laterals are
proposed to be lined for salinity control purposes. Reclamation has projected
that about 27,700 tons of salt can be prevented from entering the Colorado
River annually by lining these unlined sections. The construction and interest
during costs to complete this work (January 1991 price level) are estimated to
to be $11,730,000. The cost to remove one ton of salt would therefore be
approximately $36.60.

Schedule

The Planning Report/Environmental Statement are scheduled to be completed in
late fall 1992. Construction on the project could commence as early as spring
of 1994.
