The 2.6-mile Inlet Canal diverts water from
the Yest Mancos River to the offstream reservoir. Vater from the reservoir
returns to the original streambed at a point higher than the project land
through the 2.2 mile Outlet Canal. Local interests constructed the major part
of the distribution system around the turn of the century. In 1947, the Bureau
of Reclamation constructed the works furnishing supplemental water to an
established agricultural area and providing a domestic water supply for Mesa
Verde National Park, the Mancos Rural Vater Company, and the town of Mancos.

AUTHORIZATION AND CONSTRUCTION

The President approved the project on October 24, 1940, under the Vater
Conservation and Utilization Program Act of August 11, 1939 (53 Stat. 1418) as
amended October 14, 1940 (54 Stat. 1119). Construction commenced on July 24,
1941, and was completed May 18, 1950. Vorld Yar II delayed.construction of this
comparatively small project. The Civilian Conservation Corps started to build
the dam under Reclamation's supervision. In March 1942, the Civilian
Conservation Corps was disbanded, and people from the Civilian Public Service
resumed construction. Because they made very little progress, it was necessary
to complete the work by contract after the war. The major project works were
completed between May 1947 and December 1948, and the project delivered the
first water from Jackson Gulch Reservoir to the water users in 1949.

OPERATING AGENCY

The Mancos Yater Conservancy
Outlet Canal, and Reservoir.
distribution system.

District operates and maintains the Inlet Canal,
The water users operate and maintain the
