<br />/ <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />.'-" <br />i <br /> <br />.~ <br /> <br />COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD <br />823 State centennial Building <br />l3l3 Sherman Street <br />Denver, Colorado 80203 <br /> <br />December, 1979. <br /> <br />RIO GRANDE RESERVOIR PROJECT <br /> <br />INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />The Rio Grande Reservoir is located in Section 13, Township <br /> <br />40 North, Range 4 west of the New Mexico Principal Meredian. in <br />Hindsdale County about 22 miles southwest of Creede. <br />The original dam was constructed around 19l5 with a capacity <br />of about 5l,OOO p'r"::e-feet and has provided irrigation water f()r <br />lands in the Closed Basin since then. <br /> <br />PROBLEM <br /> <br />The Bruns Engineering Corporation submitted an inspection <br />report to the State Engineer's office in accordance with the <br />National Dam Safety Program. In the report, concern was expressed <br />that the dam would not pass a higher frequency or 50 percent of <br />the probable maximum flood without overtopping. <br />In order to reduce the risk of overtopping the dam and the <br />resulting possible failure, the San Luis Valley Irrigation District <br />took the suggested emergency corrective action early in the spring <br />of 1979 and repaired the dam. <br /> <br />CURRENT STATUS <br /> <br />In June, 1979, the San Luis Valley Irrigation District <br />submitted an application to the Colorado Water conservation Board <br /> <br />for assistance in the construction of repairs and improvements to <br /> <br />the dam.
