.

.

III. Denver's Water System

Water Collection System

.

Denver's water operation consists of two separable, but interrelated components: the
water collection system and the treated water system.

.

The water collection system is defined as all diversion, collection and transmission
facilities which store and distribute raw water prior to treatment. There are three such
systems: The South Platte Collection System, the Roberts Tunnel Collection System,
and the Moffat Tunnel Collection System. Relative locations of these facilities are
shown on Figure III-I. These can be divided into:

.

· the South System, which is comprised of the Roberts Tunnel Collection System
(including Dillon Reservoir) and the South Platte Collection System; and

· the North System, which is comprised of the Moffat Tunnel Collection System.

Williams Fork Reservoir supports both the Roberts Tunnel and the Moffat Tunnel
collection systems through water exchanges described later in this chapter. Some of the
water in Wolford Mountain Reservoir is owned by Denver Water and is used to replace
water borrowed from Green Mountain Reservoir by Dillon Reservoir.

The South Platte Collection System facilities capture water from the mainstem of the
South Platte River, as well as Bear and Cherry Creeks, and subsequently deliver this
water to the Denver Metropolitan Area. The major facilities in the system include Antero
Reservoir, Eleven Mile Canyon Reservoir, Cheesman Reservoir, Strontia Springs
Reservoir and Conduit No. 26, Platte Canyon Intake Dam and Conduit No. 20, Marston
Reservoir, Platte Canyon Reservoir, the High Line Canal, Harriman Ditch and Conduit
No. 15, Farmers and Gardeners Ditch, and Cherry Creek wells. Denver Water also has a
storage pool in Chatfield Reservoir and holds an interest in a number of ditch companies
and ditch systems which operate in the metropolitan area.

.

.

.

.

The Roberts Tunnel Collection System facilities include Dillon Reservoir and Roberts
Tunnel. These facilities capture and store Blue River water and subsequently deliver this
water to the eastern slope and down the South Platte system for use in the Denver
Metropolitan Area.

The Moffat Tunnel Collection System facilities capture water from the Williams Fork
River, the Fraser River, South Boulder Creek and Ralston Creek, and subsequently
deliver this water to the Denver Area for use. The major facilities in the system include
the Williams Fork Collection System, August P. GurnIick Tunnel (Jones Pass Tunnel),

.

.

II
