<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD <br />823 State Centennial Building <br />1313 Sherman Street <br />Denver, Colorado 80203 <br /> <br />November 1981 <br /> <br />GROUNDHOG RESERVOIR PROJECT <br /> <br />INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />The Groundhog Reservoir is the main storage facility for the <br /> <br />Montezuma Valley Irrigation Company. <br /> <br />It stores 21,000 acre-feet <br /> <br />of water which is used for suppiemental irrlgation on 35,000 acre <br /> <br />of land in the Montezuma Valley in the Cortez area. The reser- <br /> <br />voir is located approximately 30 miies northeast of Dolores, <br /> <br />Colorado. <br /> <br />It has an earthfill dam which was constructed tn <br /> <br />1939. <br /> <br />The dam has a maxImum height of 135 feet with a. crest <br /> <br />iength of 710 feet. The water released from the Groundhog <br /> <br />Reservoir during the irrigatton season is considered vital to the <br /> <br />agricultural segment of the ecomony in the Montezuma Valley. <br /> <br />PROBLEM <br /> <br />In conjunction with the National Dam Safety Program, Bovay <br /> <br />Engineers, Inc., completed a Phase I Inspection Report on <br /> <br />Groundhog Dam in October, 1978. ThIs report listed several <br /> <br />deficiencies on the dam which the owners were asked to correct. <br />
