4. DEMONSTRATION PROJECTS

PROJECT SELECTION

The 1-25 study corridor was segmented into !wen-
ty-one sites for evaluation of landscaping need,
Segmentation was based on both topography and
landscape delineation by highway structures such
as interchanges, access ramps, cross streets,
etc.. Six evaluation criteria Were developed to rank
the sites with regard to need for landscape Im-
provement. The six criteria included:
. Permanence of Site - likely hood of being al-
tered by future construction work,
. VisibHhy of She - visibHhy from the roadway.
. Vegetation Coverage - the amount of coverage
of all vegetation present.
. Qualky of Vegetation Coverage -type and con-
dition of plant material.
. Quality of Maintenance - the amount of Iitler
present and trimming required,
. Water Availability - the presence of sprinkler
systems of water lines nearby

See Appendix A for evaluation criteria,

Each crherion was ranked on a four point scale (0,
1, 2, 3), When criteria ratings were tabulated,
those sites with the highest numbers would be
designated high priority for landscaping, Those ar-
eas which are highly visible, bare of vegetation,
contain trash, have water available and are not
likely to be disturbed by construction would be
ranked highest. Final ranking scores ranged from
4-18, Sites were divided by ranking scores Into
three categories indicating the landscaping
needed:

. High Priority - score of 15 - 18
. Moderage Priority - score of 11 - 14
. low Priority - score 0/4 - 10

The four highest priority shes were presented to
the Task Force for their consideration as demon-
stration projects,

1) The area between Speer Boulevard and the
18th Street overpass.
2) 23rd Avenue Interchange,
3) Alameda/Santa Fe Interchange
4) The area between Alameda and 6th Avenue

On lhe Task Force's recommendation, two sites
were designated as the Inilial demonstration pro-
jects - the Alameda/Santa Fe and 23rd Avenue
interchanges,

Alameda-Santa Fe Drive
Interchange

This interchange will be the first demonstration pro-
jectto implement the 1-25 Landscape Guidelines
criteria, The Interchange will feature groupings of
natural plant material to reflect that existing along
the nearby Plaite River, Existing large collon-
woods will be enhanced with groupings of addition-
altree and shrub plantings, Wildtlower plantings
wifl also augmenllhe inlerchange planting plan,
Wildflowers will be planted and seeded in areas
among the shrub beds where visible from the high-
way.

All plantings will refleclthe need to Improve the vis-
ual character of this interchange, Existing pines,
cedars and shrubs will be incorporated Into group-
ings of new plantings, Grass areas will be devel-
oped so that mowing will occur mostly along the
roadway edge and not whhin the shrub and tree
groupings,

..

1.70

-/--

1-25

-.....

:DIdA_.

(;QIMA_.

...-

-.....

VlIl... ~

19.
