Nine of the measures are
required by House Bill 1154. Due to the needs of the City, another measure, replacement
of aging water meters, has been added to the list of programs. The measures are
discussed in order of effectiveness to accomplish the recommended conservation goals.

Water Meters
Inaccurate water meters are probably the biggest reason for the City's
extraordinarily high percentage of unaccounted-for water. Most of the meters have been
in service for over 15 years. Based on meter accuracy tests conducted by the staff, these
meters are about 84 percent accurate. The following program to test and replace meters
is recommended:

Small Meters (I-inch and smaller)

.___ __l

.__..EstimateJhe accnracy..of small meters_(J...inc\1 ancl smaller}lhrough..______
testing of a representative sample. The purpose of the test is to
establish the age and the accuracy of the meters.

2. Determine from the sampling testing the approximate age of meters
with 95 percent accuracy.

3. Establish a three-year meter replacement program to replace those
meters whose age is greater than the age estimated in Task 2.

City of Brighton, Colorado
March 1997.34619.100

8

Report on Water
Conservation Plan
