participation in aggressive recycling program; and

- high visibility opportunity to showcase results to local,
state, and national audience.

2.5 COMMUNITY DEMONSTRATION AND EDUCATION:
The Public Demonstration and Information Plan includes:

1. Construction of the xeriscape garden/playground which will
demonstrate the appropriateness and function of xeriscape
vegetation in a park environment;

2. Permanent display of the landscape site plan will identify the
type of vegetation used, describe the water conservation
features of the project, and the xeriscape concept;

3. Design and production of a high-quality Guide to Water
Efficient Landscape in Colorado Mountain Communities.
describing appropriate xeriscape and other water conservation
practices tailored for mountain communities, headwater
communities, and the Western Slope.

Project may be replicated in master plan, landscape planning, and
implementation of parks along the 150-mile Yampa River Recreation
Corridor in Routt and Moffat Counties and in the municipal parks in
Craig, Hayden, and steamboat Springs.

2.6 INNOVATIVE FEATURES AND BENEFITS:
In the past decade,' tourism has established itself as Colorado's
second largest industry. Much of the tourism acti vi ty has been
generated by the winter tourism and destination resort activities
of Western Slope communities. Historically, these tourism and
headwater communities have been heavy users of water, particularly
for landscape, parks, and recreation amenities such as golf
courses. For a typical Colorado municipality fifty percent of the
water consumption is for outdoor usage. We anticipate outdoor usage
may be even higher in tourism communities and suggest there are
substantial savings to be achieved through prudent outdoor water
usage in these communities.

Our research indicates this project will be innovative for a
mountain resort community located'on the Western Slope of Colorado.
Comparable , comprehensive water conservation proj ects have been
implemented in Colorado, primarily in the metropolitan communities
of the Front Range. This project is tailored to the special needs
and microclimate characteristic of destination resort communities
