PART 2

Landscape Water Auditor Training Course

Project Description

1. Provide a summary description of your proposed project. Be sure to provide a
description of; the need for your project, how you would implement your project,
arul the participants in your project.

A computerized water audit training program for large turf areas would include
an IBM compatible lap top computer with software written to enable the auditor
to work in the field to complete the audit. A training class of two days will be
provided for all persons wanting to become a Landscape Auditor through the City
of Arvada Parks and water conservation staff. This training program will not
conflict with any other water conservation training programs, such as provided
by Metro Water Conservation, Inc. (MWCI) or any Xeriscape programs.
Instead, the proposed program will be directed to large turf grass maintenance
personnel, i.e., school districts, city, county and state parks departments. There
will also be a training manual for the audit program which will be written by the
City of ArvadalNorth Jeffco Parks Department and water conservation staff. At
the present time, there are no audit training programs offered in the State of
Colorado; thus, all training is very costly and takes place in California. This is
a negative cost to out of state administrators in government positions to send their
personnel to this training. However, the State of California's Master Water Audit
Program paid back more than what it cost to start the program in water savings
the first year it was operating in California. I strongly feel that if we initiated
such a program, we could see very substantial water savings in Colorado. For
example, the City of Arvada Parks Department and Utilities Division
accomplished a water audit of approximately 10 acres of irrigated turf for a
townhome association in the City. The savings to the townhome association was
13 % of their outdoor water costs for the previous year. Another part of this
program would be to make a video training film of the course for those parks
departments' and school districts' maintenance personnel. This training video
could be sent to any school district or parks department who could not afford to
send their personnel to Arvada, but would like to be able to reap the cost savings
of water auditing their outdoor water uses. The proposed program could be taken
on the road to Durango and Grand Junction when the need for such training was
identified.
