WATER CONSERVATION GRANT PROJECT WORKPLAN

I. Due to the greater awareness of the need to conserve water and the
need to satisfy the gardening desires of residents of arid regions,
the Town of Otis has developed plans for a demonstrative xeriscape (3D6t;.rJ~e J
garden. City lots adjacent to Highway 34 through Otis have been
chosen for the site. The garden will feature a handicapped accessible
path, a dry stream bed, a rock garden with native moss rock, and
native prairie flora. A large section of the garden has been reserved
for plants dependent upon natural rainfall only. A smaller portion
will showcase plants needing little supplemental watering.

II. The goals of the garden project will be:

- To demonstrate that water efficient gardens will provide beauty
and variety in a semi-arid region.

- To educate visitors on plant selection, design, mulching methods and
soil improvement of xeriscape gardening.

III. Because the project has not been completed, water data is not available.
The water meter and rain gauge are available for future data collection.

Articles about the garden will be submitted to local newspapers.
Home Demonstration Clubs will also receive flyers about the garden.
Time will be donated by Otis Action Team members.

Volunteer work will be the major source of coordination and construction
of the garden. These volunteers will include: Otis Action Team, Otis
Lions Club, 4-H Clubs, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Otis Young Farmers, and
community members.

The design and planning of the garden have already been done.

IV. Identification tags will be used to label plants in the garden and
the landscape design will be on display. Layout and construction of
the garden will continue to be done with volunteer work.

V. Wanda Purdy will be the project spokesperson.

News releases will be handled by members of the Otis Action Team.

VI. Data will be collected from the water meter readings and from rain
gauge readings and evaluated.

Other methods of water conservation will be used, including various
types of mulching materials.

VII. The project will be completed by September 30, 1993. Signs will be
in place by the spring of 1994. Maintenance will be on-going.
