CITY OF ARVADA - WATER CONSERVATION PROGRAM

Measure:

Computerized Irrigation Control
Reduction in Irrigation Water Usage

Objective:

Applicable Sectors:

City of Arvada/North Jeffco Parks and Landscapes

Measure Description

The City of Arvada would install a computerized irrigation management system to
provide efficient control of irrigation water applied to City/North Jefteo parks,
greenbelts, planted street medians, and landscaped facilities. All future (new) irrigated
areas would be connected to the system; existing irrigated areas would be connected to
the system as they are shown to be cost effective on a case-by-case basis. The Central
Controller for the system must have the capacity to connect all existing and future
irrigation sites in the City. Further, the system must be capable of interrogating local
weather station(s) for on-site environmental conditions, programming and controlling the
precise watering amounts, and automatically responding to changes in conditions.

Background

During 1989, the City Staff studied and compared available computerized irrigation
management systems and visited municipalities in the local area which have installed
these types of systems. The Cities of Aurora, Boulder, Lakewood, Pueblo, and
Westminster have installed these systems. The installed systems were observed in
operation and records of their performance were reviewed with the operators in each
City. The staff then prepared the technical specifications, a statement of work, and
other supporting Request for Bid documents describing the type of system suited to.
Arvada's needs. On November 17, 1989, competitive bids were received by the City to
supply and install a Radio-Controlled Centralized Computer Operated Irrigation System
and Weather Station in Arvada.

Contract to Purchase System

Bid submittals have been reviewed and all documents are in order for award of the
contract for a System with the performance characteristics as described below.

Low Bidder:

CPS Distributors
560 South Lipan Street
Denver, Colorado 80223

Manufacturer/System:

Motorola/MIR-5000 System

$42,753.10, this price. includes all equipment,
materials, and labor to install the System and
Weather Station, and connect the Arvada Center and
West 80th Avenue Median to the System.

Contract Amount:

Capabilities of System:

. The Central Controller communicates with the field sites and weather
station via radio. As many as 999 field controllers at irrigation sites can be
connected to the System.

-1-
