Time periods for longer than two days for having visitors stay at the home.

Any significant change in time spent at home as a result of someone becoming employed that
had been at home, or vice versa.

Any seasonal use of a water-consuming feature, such as a hot tub, outdoor decorative pool or
stream, or a swimming pool.

LAWN WATERING EDUCATION

Just prior to the beginning of the 1994 lawn watering season, each participant received a four-page
public education brochure on efficient lawn watering. (Included as Attachment C.) The intent was to
theoretically equalize all 80 of the participants, as far as their knowledge of efficient lawn watering
practices. The assumption was that even if some read it and some didn't, it would be the same
approximate percentage for both groups.

FIELD WORK PERFORMED

A plot plan was computer-generated for each of the 80 participant's lots. (Example included as
Attachment D.) Two research assistants were hired to acquire the following information, with the use
of the plot plans and by performing individual site visits:

using the plot plan as a base, draw a reasonably accurate and scaled drawing of the house,
driveway, landscaped portions of the lot, and other significant features

type of irrigation, whether automatic underground system or manual

species of turfgrass

a rating of the water-requirements of the landscaping, on a scale of I to 4. (See Attachment E.)

calculation of the approximate area of the landscape that is actually watered, making allowances
for such cases as drip-irrigated plant materials

ADDITIONAL DATA-GATHERING AND CALCULATIONS

Additional information gathered for the research study included the following:

Water use records for all 80 homes for the period of December I, 1993 to December 1, 1994.
This information was obtained from the City of Fort Collins Water Utility and the Fort Collins -
Loveland Water Utility.

Daily evapotranspiration and precipitation data for Fort Collins for the 1994 lawn watering
season

lot sizes for each participant

the applicable water district and account number for each participant

3
