1996 WORK PLAN FOR THE OFFICE OF WATER CONSERVATION One of the goals of the Conservation Office Is to Instill a publiC conservation ethic principally through education. this approach works only If the programs are timely and meaningful to our citizens. Determination of these qualities Is achieved through monitoring of public comment, via program evaluation forms, and pre and post comparisons of water consumption, using billing records. The Conservation Office annually evaluates all programs and Implements feasible changes on an ongoing basis. Based on this monitoring and evaluation process the Conservation Office Is considering expanding current conservation efforts to Include the following programs: .Research plots of alternative turfgrass species such as various types of Native grasses. this research would take numerous climatic date, combine this information with species establishment, aesthetic acceptance, and supplemental irrigation to provide reliable, local Information about the feasibility of using native species in place of more water Intensive turfgrass species currentiy being used. . Large area Irrigation monitoring program through the use of billing records and GIS coverages. Notify large Irrigators, Including condominium and townhome complexes of excessive landscape water use and offer educational and technical advice to reduce consumption. . Expand the residential water audit program to Include multifamily units. . Implement a master compostlng program with the Environmental Management Office to promote the use of compost as a water conservation method. - Work with the Billing Division to modify utilities bill to graph current and last year's water consumption. Temperature data will be printed in a table adjacent to the graph. This will serve as a visual reminder of differences in annual and seasonal water consumptions, quantify water savings through the installation of water efficient plumbing devices, and prompt educational Inquiries about conservation methods. . Initiate a drip buster and toilet leak detection program. - Place conserve stickers on all Utilities Depanment vehicles to show solidarity and suppon for conservation. The Conservation Office is dedicated to maintaining the high quality of service and standards in established programs. To that end, this Office will continue to offer all current services Including, but not limited to the following programs: U -----:Contlnued educational and regulatory effons-assoclated-with- tiJ-e -Lawn Permit and- Wasting-Water. Ordinances. . Updating of the Lawn Permit Ordinance. . Maintain educational efforts at their current levels-Including, but not limited to, continuation of the Xeriscape seminars, Youth Water Festival, and Speaker Bureau's engagements. .
