.

.

.

WHAT WE DID!

In September 1996 The Office of Water Conservation Made several grant available to demonstrate the benelits
of water efficiency. In November 1996 Little Thompson Water District applied for one of the $5,000.00 grants to
promote water conservation through education. The Little Thompson grant proposal was to purchase water conservation
and Xeriscape materials
(books, VHS tapes, periodicals, pampWets and computer software) set up an up to date resource section in the local
Library and promote the availability of the information.

On February 14, 1997 Little Thompson Water District was notified that the grant had been approved. Over the
next four months Little Thompson Water District worked with the Berthoud Public Library to research and order
resource materials for the collection. Work also started with the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District to
develop a press release and art work for a poster and for "bill stuffer" I bookmarks. In May 1997 the contract was
fmalized and the project Was ready to start. Over 150 books and other resource items were ordered. Then the work realty
started.

HOW WE DID IT!

The Berthoud Public Library staff and volunteers ordered, cataloged, and setup the Xeriscape section in the
Library.

Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District produced great artwork lor the poster and the "bill stuffer" I
bookmarks.

Press release was sent out and published in area papers in early May 1997.

Little Thompson Water District, Longs Peak Water District, The Towns of Mead, Johnstown, and Berthoud
sent out "bill stuffers" in water bills or in news letters to help spread the word.

Little Thompson Water District and the Berthoud Public Library hosted an open house on January 31.1998
featuring the collection of water conservatioD materials and Xeriscape design clinics with Jan Caniglia of the
XeriClinic Design Group. High Country Gardens (Santa Fe, NM) provided Xeriscape Plant Catalogs for all
participants.

Posters were made and displayed through out the area including 3' x 6' posters on the side of my old 52' Ford
truck in the Berthoud Days (June 1998) parade.

OH THE PROBLEMS!

Findin2 books. We were wording to spend about $3,500.00 on resource materials and had to struggle to fmd
enough books to spend the money. In the end we were able to fmd the books. Many or the books were new and
just off of the presses and some were not eveD publisher yet.

Timin2 is evervtbin2. The timing of the grant and availability of the fuods along with the long lead time on
ordering books would not allow us to have the collection ready early enough for the planting season in the
spring of 1997. We delayed a library open house until the collection was mostly complete and used it to re
inform the public about the collection in 1998.

KeeDinl! books on the shelf. The Xeriscape collection was showcased on a separate book rack and a few
books were on display racks rather than on the shelf The Library staff was pressed to keep the book display
full. The collection was a hit. Many people would come to the Library just to see the collection of books and
tapes available.
