practicing and achieving water conservation.

BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES

1.

Meter all City facilities and track consumption
Potable water usage at all City facilities must be metered in order to document accurate
water use and measure the effectiveness of conservation measures.

Status: All City facilities, with a few exceptions are metered. Metering captures 97%
of City water use.

Implementation: All City facilities will be metered by December 31, 1995.

2.

Evaluate retrofit of Citv buildin!!s with low water use plumbin!! fixtures

Status: City facilities built after 1990 have low water use plumbing fixtures installed (3.5
gallon or less per flush); facilities built prior to 1990 do not

Implementation:
. Toilets: Displacement bags will be installed in all 5-7 gallon flush toilets in 1996. As
toilets go out of service. they will be replaced with 1.6 gallon flush toilets. It is estimated
the installation of displacement bags will save 689 thousand gallons of water per year.
and total replacement of toilets with 1.6 gallons flush toilets will save 2,065 thousand
gallons of water per year.
. Faucets: Aerators will be installed in all faucets in 1996. All faucets with heavy
public use will be evaluated for installation of water conservation fixtures--i.e.. spring
loaded or infrared sensor turn-on/turn-off features.
. Showers: Signs will be installed in 1996 at Sunset Pool. Centennial Pool. and the
Memorial Building locker rooms reminding customers to turn off showers. A
comprehensive cost/benetit analysis will be conducted of a total retrofit of the public
showers for installation of a low-flow fixtures. mixing valves (to control temperature). and
an infrared sensor or spring loaded system to turn the showers off and on. The
recommended retrofit will be installed within the estimated 2-3 year payback period.
. New construction: Low water use plumbing fixtures will be installed in all new
construction.
