.

experiment where ice at minus-10 degrees Fahrenheit was put

in an insulated chamber along with a temperature probe

connected through an analog-to-digital interface to a

computer. For eighteen hours the computer tracked the

temperature change as the water went through the three

states of solid, liquid, and gas and then decayed to room

temperature. The result of this experiment was a computer

generated graph showing the temperatures of the three states

for the atmospheric pressure at Monument, Colorado and this

graph, without labels and titles, was the test presented to

the students for completion.

It also showed the leveling of

.

temperatures during a change of state and the effect of

altitude on the temperature of boiling water.

3. The change of state of water was also demonstrated

using a distillation column. Water was boiled and the gas

captured in a distillation column where it was cooled and

returned to a liquid state. This demonstration was extended

to show that the distillation of water could be used as a

method of water purification as well as the crucial part it

played in the water cycle.

.

13
