NEIGHBORHOOD DATA
The neighborhood of Subject is located on the southern periphery of the City
of Durango. It may be defined as the strip commercial development along U.S.
Highway 160/550 from Gateway Drive (the 8th Avenue bypass) on the north to the
intersection with 550 South to the south. Since the 1980s subdivisions in the
neighborhood, such as Centennial Center, Skatetown, Durango Mall, South
Durango Center and New County Subdivision, Escalante Crossings and Mercury
Village have been annexed to the City of Durango.
The four lane U.S. Highway 160/550 bypass was completed in 1979
providing highway frontage to the neighborhood. The neighborhood is one of three
commercial neighborhoods in Durango including the Downtown Business District
and the North Main commercial neighborhood. Development prior to the
completion of the highway bypass was limited to the Bodo Business Ranches,
some light industrial, and single family houses. The neighborhood was primarily
vacant.
The Downtown Business District caters to pedestrian traffic. The only other
competitive neighborhood for vehicular traffic is North Main. North Main, U.S.
Highway 550 North, connects Durango with Durango Mountain Resort (formerly
Purgatory Ski Area). Development in this neighborhood is traffic oriented
commercial with older motels, restaurants, shops, offices and service stations. The
traffic count on North Main ranges from 35,000 on the south to 14,000 at the city
limits.
51
