The overall economic trends in the community are indicated in the following <br /> statistics. <br /> POPULATION <br /> The 2010 census shows La Plata County with a population of 51,334 <br /> residents, up 14% from the count of 43,941 in 2000. The 2010 census shows the <br /> City of Durango with 16,887 residents, up 18% from the 2000 count of 13,922. <br /> Population growth within the City of Durango is constrained by geographic <br /> features. <br /> SALES TAX RECEIPTS <br /> Sales tax receipts by the City of Durango show an increase in each year <br /> from 1980 through 1985 followed by a decline between 1985 and 1986 and a <br /> further decline between 1986 and 1987. The growth pattern resumed in 1988 <br /> through 2008. The declines in 2009 and 2010 reflect the national economy. This <br /> pattern is depicted in the following graph.
