Preliminary Design Memorandum
Silt Pumping Plant Rehabilitation
operators have taken them off with detrimental impacts to the piping and
equipment.
• Motors custom designed for the additional flywheel loads are required.
One District operating a Reclamation designed project recently added the
original flywheel to a standard replacement motor. The motor broke its
frame immediately upon startup and was not repairable.
• A flywheel will not provide any protection from hydraulic transients
caused by discharge valve operational mistakes.
Air Chamber
Advantages:
• Proactive hydraulic transient mitigation (immediately reduces
hydraulic transient pressure wave development in the pipe when a
change in velocity occurs)for all normal starts and stops,
emergency and shutdown cases.
• Will provide a significant level of protection to the system if
discharge valves are operated outside of the prescribed timing.
Disadvantages:
• Air compressor and control system maintenance is required.
• Air chamber interior and exterior paint systems must be
maintained.
• Exterior air chamber location is exposed to vandalism.
• Interior air chamber location takes up room in the plant.
Recommendation: Perform the hydraulic transient mitigation analysis early in
the design process to determine a recommended hydraulic transient mitigation
solution for this particular project. If an air chamber is determined to be the best
hydraulic transient mitigation device, consider a bladder style of air chamber. The
bladder air chamber does not require a dedicated compressor.
24
FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY
