Pipeline Segment No. 1 Alignment
PWP Pipeline Segment No. 1 extends from the Pump Station No. 1 site at the North Campus
aquifer recharge and recovery facilities to the Pump Station No.2 site. The Segment 1
alignment lies within the Brighton and Commerce City municipal limits and in Adams
County. Land use along the alignment varies from agricultural, planned unit developments,
single-family residential developments,medium-density residential developments, and
mixed-use areas comprised of commercial, office and open space.Figure 6 below provides
an overview of the Segment 1 alignment.Segment 1 will cross the South Platte River
floodplain east of Riverdale Road and west of the Brighton Road, and the Third Creek
floodplain at Highway 85 near 144th Avenue and along the Potomac Road alignment
between 140th Avenue and 134th Avenue.
Within Commerce City, the pipeline alignment will generally be located within the E-470
MUE,and will traverse through an agricultural area located between I-76 and Buckley Road
to avoid jurisdictional wetland areas adjacent to E-470.The City is determining where it
may be necessary to acquire additional temporary construction or permanent easements,
such as in areas parallel to the E-470 MUE and along the periphery of planned
developments, where it is likely that utility easements will be designated for the
developments. The selected alignment begins at a property north of a United Power
electrical substation at Highway 7 and Riverdale Road in Brighton.
The route south of Highway 7 crosses west of the Riverdale Road right-of-way (ROW)
through private property. The first 1.4 miles of the pipeline will pass through property with
a total of nine current landowners.Aurora Water and its team are coordinating with existing
landowners and stakeholders with respect to utilities planned along Riverdale Road. The
selected location of the South Platte River crossing avoids the Brighton Diversion structure
and future bank stabilization improvements proposed by the Urban Drainage and Flood
Control District(UDFCD,2002).The selected alignment passes through a dike area between
two proposed gravel lakes. The pipeline will penetrate two slurry walls where cut-off walls
will be required to maintain the integrity of the slurry walls.
The design team considered and eliminated an alternative pipeline alignment south of the
river crossing along the Riverdale Road corridor to E-470,and east along E-470 to the
selected alignment location at Potomac Road and E-470,because of construction restraints
and impacts on local residents along Riverdale Road.
The selected alignment continues southeast from the Medlin and Mitchel gravel pit areas,
through City of Brighton property, and will pass through seven private property parcels
before it crosses under U.S.Highway 85 and the parallel Union Pacific Railroad line.It
continues southeast to a lateral canal and then south along Potomac Street, crossing through
eight private property parcels before it crosses under the E-470 freeway. The remainder of
the alignment will follow the E-470 MUE and ROW.However,a short section between
Highway I-76 and Buckley Road will be located outside the E-470 alignment,in order to
preserve existing wetlands. The alignment through this area requires easement acquisition
from three property owners.
14
