Minimal additional infrastructure will be required to incorporate the turbine into this diversion
dam. A general schematic of the proposed configuration is shown below. This schematic does not
reflect the entire site, but only the bay that the turbine will be installed in. As you can see in the
photograph of the site, there are two bays with radial
gates (sand gates), one of which will be used to house the
turbine. The radial gate will stay in place and the turbine
,...,....S., will sit behind a new concrete wall within the bay. The
•. .,_/ draft tube will extend into a lower stilling pool that will
. ./ `''`- maintain adequate submergence.
The Ogee Weir of the diversion dam will act as a bypass in
'i the case of emergency or maintenance. The radial gate
will be programmed to close in the case of a grid failure to
Schematic of proposed configuration prevent run away speeds in the generator.A simple crane
will be installed above the turbine to assist in the removal
of the cassette for maintenance.
Upstream of the turbine a screen will be installed to prevent the passage of large fish into the
machine. The SLH turbine will pass smaller 2-4 inch long fish without damage to the fish or the
equipment. Larger fish will not be allowed to enter the machine using the screen. This screen will
be designed to be self cleaning and require little maintenance.
CONCEPTUAL PLAN
Conceptual plans including a plan and elevation of the hydropower facility is included in Appendix
B of this report.
COST ESTIMATE
Engineers Opinion of Probable Construction Cost
rApplegate
Group...
1499 W 120th Ave. Job No.: 11-108
Suite200 Low Head Hydropower Installation By: LAG
Denser,CO 80234 Date: 6/3/2011
Phone:(303)452-6611 Cient Rio Grande Canal
Fax (303)452-2759
Description of Work Item Units Quantity Unit Cost Total Cost
Turbine,Generator,electrical equipment and draft tube EA 1 $ 250,000 $ 250,000
Installation of turbine EA 1 $ 10,000 $ 10,000
Modification of sand gate EA 1 $ 92,000 $ 92,000
Cassette Crane EA 1 $ 3,000 $ 3,000
Skiing Pool EA 1 $ 30,000 $ 30,000
Cofferdam during construction EA 1 $ 10,000 $ 10,000
Screen upstream of unit EA 1 $ 15,000 $ 15,000
Natel Hydroengine Extension of transmission line and transformer EA 1 $ 30,000 $ 30,000
Installation Interconnection EA 1 $ 10,000 $ 10,000
$ 450,000
Engineering and construction management $ 30,000
FERC Permitting through GEO Pilot Project $ 15,000
NEPA Compliance $ 10,000
Contingencies $ 46,000
Total $ 551,000
Rio Grande Canal Water Users Association I Project Description 6
