The other sites are still considered
feasible, and maybe considered again in the future after the completion of this project.
ANALYSIS OF ALTERNATIVES
Early on in the pre-feasibility stage of this project the diversion dam was selected as the most
favorable site for hydropower development on the Rio Grande Canal. This diversion dam was found
to be an ideal site for low head hydropower development for the following reasons.
1) The Board of the Rio Grande Canal Water Users Association is proactively seeking
hydroelectric opportunities within their canal system.
2) The existing diversion dam provides much of the infrastructure required for the installation
of this equipment.
a. A trash rack system to prevent debris from entering or damaging the turbine.
b. Regulated gates on both the canal and the diversion dam to maintain the optimal
head for the turbine.
c. A concrete bay of sufficient size to house the turbine and equipment.
Rio Grande Canal Water Users Association I Project Description 3
