expected to arrive by noon of that day to further ease pressures on the La Junta
area.
By July 6, Pueblo Reservoir had dropped below the Flood Pool and releases were
below 5,000 cfs. Although Pueblo Dam was out of the official Flood Pool, there was
still approximately 14,000 ac-ft of flood water impounded in the reservoir which
required evacuation. USBR and the CDWR maintained the elevated release rate
from Pueblo Dam for an additional few days before shifted back to normal operations.
By July 11, all flood waters were evacuated from Pueblo Reservoir.
On July 15, the reservoir pool at John Martin Dam peaked at an elevation of 3,850.6
(325,676 ac-ft), less than 6 inches from the published Flood Pool. Releases from
John Martin were increased from 400 cfs on June 15 to a maximum release of 1,750
cfs on June 27. John Martin releases remained over 1,000 cfs until mid-August.
Although John Martin never entered flood operations in 2015, it is worth noting that
the reservoir held only 6,157 ac-ft on October 31, 2014, and only 52,767 ac-ft at the
beginning of the 2015 of irrigation season. USACE did not operate for flood control at
Trinidad Reservoir in 2015.
a. Trinidad Lake
The installation of new instrumentation on the Trinidad Dam embankment was
completed during 2015. This instrumentation included eight piezometers and four
inclinometers. Some of these instruments were installed to replace existing
unserviceable units, while other instruments were installed to enhance USACE's
monitoring capabilities along the main dam embankment. The project included the
construction of two permanent access roads along the downstream face of the
embankment.
During 2015, herbicide was applied to woody vegetation as a follow-up treatment to
the vegetation removal and herbicide applications that occurred in 2014.
In FY 2016, gate painting and maintenance will begin on the two service gates and
the two emergency gates in the control tower. The coating treatment reduces
corrosion and increases the service life of the water control structures.
b. John Martin Reservoir
During 2015, several projects were completed on the structure of John Martin Dam.
The installation of four new water stop valves that allow water from the lake to be
used for maintenance issues inside the dam was completed. Two new gate valves
and two new stop check valves were installed on the sump pumps located in the
grouting gallery of the dam.
Lake Hasty, which is situated just downstream of John Martin Dam and to the north
of the Arkansas River channel, is filled by groundwater inflow and reservoir seepage
3
