Starting with natural flows and data for demands and water rights, the model estimates
diversions, return flows, storage, etc. and the resulting stream flows.
3. The daily model is set up to rely heavily on patterns from key structures and gages
with complete records to convert the information from the monthly model to a daily timestep.
Therefore the daily natural flows at Hermosa Creek for all years (even those with gage
record) are calculated based on a different headwater gage that has a complete record. •
The daily model is run in forward mode to estimate diversions, return flows, storage, and
stream flows.
Therefore:
1. The volume of water at the Hermosa Creek gage in the monthly model is identical to the
monthly gaged volume during periods when the gage was operating.
2. The volume of water at the Hermosa Creek gage in the monthly model is estimated based
on other nearby gages during periods with no gage record.
3. The daily estimated flow at the Hermosa Creek gage is close to, but not equal to, the
gaged flow during periods when the gage was operating. The discrepancies are due to
differences between the pattern headwater gage used to create the daily natural flow data and
the Hermosa Creek gage. In general, the other headwater gage is slightly flashier and
therefore exhibits higher peaks but is in general a good fit to the available daily gage
record.
I hope that helps. If you have any questions, please let me know.
At this point, it looks like I am available on November 3rd, but I can confirm in mid to late
October.
Thanks,
Michelle
Michelle Garrison
Water Resources Specialist
Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB)
2
