The Water Roundtable meetings were halted for several
months in order to give the agencies a chance to complete a draft of their Land and
Resource Management Plan Revision. The draft Plan Revision, which is a joint effort of
the San Juan National Forest and Bureau of Land Management's San Juan Resource
Area, has been through a review by the Washington, D.C. office on both the BLM side
and the Forest Service side. It has also been reviewed by the Forest Service's Regional
Office and the BLM's State Office and is undergoing a final review from the Regional
Office.
On a trip to Washington, D.C., two weeks prior to the Water Roundtable meeting, agency
officials briefed staff in the offices of Senators Ken Salazar and Wayne Allard and Third
District Rep. John Salazar on the progress of the Plan as well as the alternatives it
contains.
Mark said the deputy director of the BLM asked what would be in the headlines when the
Plan came out. Mark responded that the headlines would likely involve water, as well as
oil and gas leasing.
Since the Water Roundtable last met on Nov. 15, 2006, there has been a change back to
the Forest Service Planning Rule of 1982 that will be followed in drafting the Plan.
1
