River Protection Workgroup
Steering Committee Meeting
10/11/11
Meeting Notes (draft)
Present: Pete Kasper, Bruce Whitehead,John Taylor,Chuck Wanner,Ann Oliver,Steve Fearn,John
Whitney,Wendy McDermott(SJCA representative), Darlene Marcus(Congressman Scott Tipton's
office),with Tami Graham and Marsha Porter-Norton.
General
• The minutes from September 2011 were approved.
• Wendy McDermott has been hired as the River Coordinator for SJCA.She and was introduced
and welcomed. Darlene Marcus is the new area field staff for Congressman Scott Tipton. She
was also introduced and welcomed too.
• The importance of continued involvement of the CDWR was stated. They were thanked for
everything they are doing for the RPW, notably the maps.
• The Vallecito Creek/Pine report has been mailed to key players including the USFS and CPAW
(formerly CDOW).
• The RPW is on the agenda for the 1/12 CWCB meeting to be held in Denver. Bruce,Steve,
Wendy, Chuck and Marsha can all make it.As it gets closer,we can prepare and see who wishes
to be there to represent the RPW, Marsha said. This is for informational and update purposes.
• Wendy and Bruce will be doing an interview with KDUR radio on river protection tools including
WSR.
• It was announced that SWCD recent gave$3,500 to the RPW project and that matches needed
to be forthcoming.
Animas
• The field trip was a success.A variety of people attended and reports are that it was very
interesting as both human and ecological values were covered. Bruce asked if a more recent
study on the Black Swift bird was available. Marsha said she would ask the USFS. The meeting
was processed by the group. Generally, people feel the group is starting to come together in
terms of the process.
• The next meeting will be Bruce talking about"Water 101." Bruce said he would invite Pete to be
part of that discussion.
• Marsha stated that MSI's director, Marcie Bidwell, offered to do outreach with and for the RPW
for the Animas River Workgroup in Silverton. The steering committee felt that any and all
outreach should be done directly by the RPW members. Of course, if MSI wishes to educate its
constituents about the process,that's great.
• Marsha said she spoke about the RPW at the Water 101 workshop held in Pagosa and that an
issue came up about the continued need to keep communities educated about the process and
the workgroups.
• Ann is still working on the Information Sheet in terms of gathering information the group
requested including mapping the protections.
Piedra
1
