Several
amendments were made in 2014 to the vegetation monitoring sheets and were corrected for each
year. A complete list of amendments is available upon request.
Annual reports were prepared discussing findings and were submitted to the ACOE (WestWater
2010; WestWater 2011 b; WestWater 2012). Photos were taken at each plot every year. Photos
are found on the accompanying compact disc. 1
Field Collection Method
Four sites were selected around the reservoir as a representative setting of the dominant
vegetation types in 2010 (Figure 3). A transect was placed at each site above the new high water
mark extending into the basin of the reservoir to collect baseline data. '
Data was collected at 5-meter increments using the Daubenmire method for percent cover of each
species present in the quadrat. Each plot placement varies slightly from year to year because each
individual plot was not pinned for permanent placement. It was determined that permanent
placement of each plot was not necessary to show trends in vegetation establishment or
deterioration. Quadrats were broken into three zones: above high water level, newly inundated,
and below restricted level to reflect the different hydrologic regimes.
Five additional transects were added in 2011 to improve assessment quality and the quantity of
data collected in the inundation zone (Figure 3). Vegetation monitoring was conducted in 2011,
2012, and 2014 to assess potential secondary impacts from increased water storage. Vegetation
monitoring did not take place in 2013 because the reservoir was not filled while required
maintenance to the dam was done.
Vegetation data was collected on the following dates:
• August 8 and 9, 2010 (baseline conditions)
• August 8 and 9, 2011
WestWater Engineering Page 5 of 14 February 2015
