Special Irrigation Season EA Release to Test North Platte Choke Point Capacity:
The PRRIP will continue to monitor the discharge capacity of the North Platte River at North
Platte, as it relates to the National Weather Service flood stage of 6.0 foot. The Program and
other organizations continue to manage invasive phragmites, one of the factors contributing to
reduced capacity at the choke point, and investigate other means of increasing discharge
capacity. If during routine irrigation season deliveries down the North Platte River by the
Districts, it becomes apparent that the capacity could be tested again by the release of EA water
(i.e. in combination with natural flow and storage water releases to create a total flow that
approaches the equivalent of a flood stage- magnitude release), such use of EA water will be
considered.
Estimate of WY 10 EA Carry -Over:
WY09 Carry -Over
87,680
87,680
10% Storable Natural Inflows
+ 38,500
+39,475*
Evap & Seepage Loss
- 15,000 *
- 4,270*
EA Summer Flow Augmentation
- 30,000
- 35,000
WY10 EA Carry -Over
81,180 *
* Estimate 87,885
EA Release Priorities for WY09 (from Table 2 in WY09 AOP)
Oct 1 —Nov
15
1,800
whooping crane, waterfowl
Medium/Low
Nov 16
— Jan 31
600
fish community, bald eagle
Low
Feb 1 —
Feb 15
1,200
sandhill crane, others
Low
Feb 16
— Mar 15
2,250
system processes (e.g. pulse)
High
Mar 16
— Mar 22
1,800
sandhill crane, others
Low
Mar 23
—May 10
1,700
whooping crane, others
Medium/Low
May 1 —
June 30
system processes
Low
May 11
— Sept 15
1,200
least tern, piping plover
Medium
Sept 16
— Sept 30
1,000
fish community
Low
Carry -over
Medium
