APPENDIX H
MEMQFANDUM
• COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD
J.William McDonald
Director
TO: Members, CWCB
FROM: Bill McDonald
DATE: September 6, 1983
SUBJECT: Agenda Item 12 , September 8-9, 1983 , Board Meeting --
SCS Study of Lone Tree Creek Basin
(Weld County, Colorado)
Introduction
Lone Tree Creek originates in Wyoming west of Cheyenne
and flows in a southeasterly direction to its confluence with the
Cache la Poudre River near Greeley, Colorado. Its drainage basin
covers approximately 1000 square miles. The basin experienced
major flooding problems in 1935, 1965, 1977 and 1983 . The Weld
County Commissioners, in an August 9 letter to the Board, are
seeking the Board's support for a Soil Conservation Service (SCS)
• study of the basin's flooding problems.
Discussion
Weld County and the Board can obtain project planning
and hydrologic analyses from the SCS through its comprehensive
River Basin Studies program. Such studies develop information
regarding the water and related land resources of a basin. In
addition, we would specifically request that a hydrologic
analysis be conducted as a part of a Lone Tree Creek Basin study
which will .develop the 2-, 5-, 10-, 25-, 50-, 100-, and 500-year
flood frequency discharges.
In May, 1977, and June, 1983 , the basin witnessed
flooding and drainage problems because of poor mainstem and
tributary channel conveyance systems. As a result of these flood
events, it is apparent that a flood control and drainage plan is
needed for the lower basin reaches. Downstream of Nunn,
Colorado, drain channels have been filled in due to extensive
irrigated agricultural activities. In addition, many of the
roadway and irrigation canal embankments act as dams, thus
inundating agricultural lands and structures during high runoff
events.
705
APPENDIX H Ag/It/12
