o Available timber harvest would be reduced by 400,000
board feet per year.
o Increasing numbers of recreationists would be attracted
to the river.
o Scenic and conservation easements would be acquired over
1 ,653 acres of private lands within the visual corridor.
Current Legislation (S. 1084)
S. 1084 would eliminate approximately 23 of the 50 .9 miles
recommended for designation in the final study report. This
reflects OMB's position that private lands not be included in
designated rivers on budgetary grounds . This would remove the
direct impact which designation would have on about 2700 acres of
private land within the river corridor.
A large portion of this 23 miles lies within the Weminuche
Wilderness Area. Some feel that it should be added back into the
bill . The Forest Service, however, maintains that the river will
be provided adequate protection through the Wilderness Act.
S
-3-
