• Study Team Recommendation
The study team recommended that the upper 26 miles of the
Gunnison River study corridor be designated as a wild river
area. This segment contains about 12 ,900 acres. It extends
through the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument into
the Gunnison Gorge Recreation Lands . See attached map.
Impacts of Designation (from Study Report)
o Lands within the eligible river segment are already in
Federal ownership and are already being managed to
protect and enhance the river 's natural and .
recreational values. Because of existing Federal land
ownership and preservation management objectives,
impacts of the proposal on all other resources --
including land use, fishing , physiography, geology,
minerals, and transportation -- will be negligible.
o Implementing the proposal will prohibit construction
of any project which may diminish existing geologic,
scenic, recreation, wildlife, and related values of
the proposed area. The following proposed water
development projects would be prohibited:
- Smith Fork hydroelectric project proposed by the
City of Delta with a 54,000 acre-foot capacity.
- Cedar Flats hydroelectric/industrial water project
proposed by Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining
Company with a 162,700 acre-foot capacity.
- Tri-County hydroelectric/industrial water project
proposed by Colorado Ute Electric Association with
72,650 acre-foot capacity.
o
• Implementation of the proposed action will cause minor
increases in recreation use and attendant vistor
impacts over those expected to occur without
designation.
Current Legislation
There is no current legislation pending on the Gunnison
River.
/bm
-2-
