U- Structure Design Guidance Sheet
I Lower Duranao Boatina Park
= do not touch
= values that can be adjusted
This spreadsheet can be used to help develop average depths of high and low flow channels. Actual dimensions
can be set during final design using these numbers as a guideline. Please only adjust cells that are blue. Other
cells should not be adjusted at all. Plot values at the bottom can be inserted into HEC -RAS directly using cut
and paste. All computations are made using the wier equation and are separated using Shipley's vertical
separation method. Dimensions are based on width PROJECTIONS (i.e. the plot shows shadow on the wall of
light shown through channels). Arc length is not shown. Analysis is vertical so location of low flow within high
flow is not important and will vary according to project constraints. This is not a comprehensive listing of
limitations of analysis and spreadsheet should be used by experienced designer for guidance purposes only.
Figure 13. Approximate weir calculations for Structure 12 at the lower end of the proposed
boating park.
Figure 13 shows that at a low flow width of 36 feet the depth in the low flow will be 1.5 feet
at 200 cfs. The high flow width of 100 feet creates a center flow depth of 4.2 feet at a flow
of 1800 cfs. These dimensions are appropriate for the character of the Animas River at this
location. Of note is that this higher flow, of 1800 cfs, is not claimed in the requested flow
regime. The claimed peak flow of 900 cfs for Structure 12 provides for this Structure's
intended purpose as a novice /intermediate instructional and training feature. At this flow,
using the same spreadsheet, the center flow depth is 3 feet.
31
