low to high water freestyle boating and continued slalom training /racing, as well as serving
as an enhancement to the rafting experience and as a navigational enhancement.
Structures 6, 7, and 8 are envisioned as deflectors that would add to the character of the
experience and would provide variety and interest for slalom users.
"U" structure 9 will reshape an existing feature, nicknamed the "Corner Pocket," such that it
permanently captures, controls and diverts all of the flow of the Animas River This
Structure will be designed to provide low to high water freestyle boating and will also be an
improvement to the slalom, rafting, and float - through experience.
"U" structures 10, 11, and 12 are envisioned as wider, more distributed structures than those
planned at Smelter and at the Corner Pocket. These structures require more flow to provide
for the same intended recreational usage but are a significant attraction to both in -town and
out -of -town users. These structures, through their width, provide for increased variety as
well as providing options for multiple boaters, and will often be used by instructional,
recreational, and developing boaters at lower flows. At lower flows these structures provide
for novice /intermediate boating, instruction, and easier recirculation as well as a lower
power option to the upper structures. The increased width will also create variety and a
significant challenge to slalom boaters. A preference for the addition of structures of this
type was expressed at the public meeting in order to provide for these additional uses
downstream of what many boaters might consider to be the more intimidating options
available at Smelter and the Corner Pocket.
Construction issues:
There is adequate access and staging available in the Durango Boating Park. The Park has a
history of being accessed for in- stream improvements. The permit process and discussions
with the USACE during the construction documents and permitting phases will outline
appropriate water control methods a s well as timing of construction and construction
methodologies.
21
