In
Western States'Departments of Water Colorado, the area of tamarisk and Russian-olive infestation is estimated to
Resources,Agriculture,&Wildlife be approximately 50,000 acres of land, but this is only a rough estimate. A
Western States' Cities and Counties more accurate inventory of tamarisk and Russian-olive infestation is a crucial
Western Universities and Colleges element in the development of control plans at the watershed scale and a
National Fish and Wildlife Foundation determination of its actual impacts. The inventory becomes the basis for
National Forest Foundation project planning (e.g., cost estimates, resource allocation, priority setting)
International Boundary&Water Commission and tracking the long-term success of control efforts. For Colorado, quality
Water Conservation Districts inventories will also place the state in a favorable position to acquire Federal
WERC funding for major demonstrations that are likely to be available in 2004-
Discovery Channel 2008.
Club 20
Colorado Riverfront Foundation Mesa State College will provide technical assistance and student interns to
Audubon Society carry out the on-the-ground surveys of infestation. Deliverables will include
Nature Conservancy maps of the Colorado River and Arkansas River watersheds identifying
Energy location of tamarisk and Russian-olive infestations. These maps will be
Native Plant Society accompanied by a report that outlines the inventory protocols; tables that
Youth Conservation Corps record GPS coordinates, infestation density/maturity, vegetative types, and
Private Landowners and Ranchers terrain; and a photo record of most sites surveyed.
Become a Partner Attached is one copy of the application form, a map of the watersheds to be
Contact: Tim Carlson,Executive Director inventoried, detailed budget estimate, Articles of Incorporation as a
at(970)248-1683 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Bylaws, and 2002-2003 revenues &
tcarlson @tamariskcoalition.org expenses statements.
Web: www.tamariskcoalition.org
The Tamarisk Coalition is proud to provide the leadership in coordinating
efforts of our partners to control tamarisk on high value riparian sites and to
restore their wildlife habitats.
